The Old Copper Culture people were the first to use metal to make tools and implements. As The Hopewell moved into Michigan, copper was traded for other products from people who brought the copper south from the Upper Peninsula. Artifacts containing native Michigan copper have been found in diverse places across America.
Iron was not used by the early Michigan people. It was not until the 1800s that iron mining became active in Michigan.
